About a year ago, I discovered that a dear sister in Christ that I know had been going out to the abortion mill to minister with another family. I had a wide range of emotions from shock to envy. At that time, I had been praying for the Lord to show me somewhere that we could minister with our large family. After reading about what these ladies were doing, I wondered if this was something we could do. Yet I wasn’t certain that this was what He would have us do and I spent months ignoring what I was feeling in my gut. Then it happened…I saw that post on Facebook announcing the 2nd annual Cities4Life dinner…and I knew I had to act and see what this was all about.
Being the procrastinator that I am, I put off registering for the event only to find out that it was full. I was so disappointed it nearly brought me to tears. With a heavy heart, I signed up to be put on the waiting list. A few days later, I sat at the computer to check Facebook. The lovely Jeannette Wilson had written on my wall…letting me know she had gotten me bumped from the waiting list!! I read and re-read this post, just to be sure I was seeing it right. This was an answer to prayer and I expressed my gratitude to her profusely I quickly filled hubby in to let him know we were all set and we both looked forward to the event with great anticipation.
The Cities4Life dinner was wonderful…truly amazing. It was everything I had hoped it would be, and so much more! My husband and I left that evening with complete conviction that we must do more than just say we are pro-life and that abortion is murder. We knew that we now had to act on our beliefs…that the Lord was leading us into something that would have a profound effect on us as a family. This was the answer to our prayer for an area our family could minister in together - my husband, myself, and our 9 children.
At the dinner we were challenged to head out to the Latrobe abortion mill the next morning to meet up with the Cities4Life team. Neither my husband nor I had ever done anything like this before. We discussed it at home that night and my husband decided I should go and see what it was like and he would stay with the kids. I lay in bed that night wondering what it would be like out there. I prayed and prayed as I tried to prepare myself for the next morning.
On that Saturday morning, I left my warm, cozy home and stepped out in faith. I had prayed and I was ready, or so I thought. Nothing could have ever fully prepared me for what I was about the experience. As I turned on to Latrobe Drive and drove just a short way, I could feel a weight of heaviness come over me. I kept driving until I got to the right place, all the while with an increasing heaviness. I parked the van, said a quick prayer and told myself everything was fine, and to stop being so emotional.
As I walked up to where people were beginning to gather I looked around in astonishment, trying to soak it all in. The parking lot “bouncers” were there playing nasty music and generally trying to look intimidating. There were women from N.O.W., there were people from Cities4Life, there were children holding signs alongside their parents, there was someone speaking truth on the mic, and there were cars pulling into that lot at an alarming rate. It looked more like a McDonald’s drive-thru! I watched in horror as woman after woman walked into the mill, some staring at us, some laughing like it was just another day.
The line between light and darkness was very clear and the spiritual battle was palpable. I had never before in my life felt ANYTHING like it. We worshiped, we prayed, we sang, experienced people talked on the mic and handed out information to those who would stop and listen. It was horrible yet amazing, devastating yet wonderful…all at the same time. All I could do was cry and pray for the Lord to have mercy on those precious babies and open the eyes of these blinded people.
When it was time to leave, I walked back to my van shaken to the core of my being. How could we as a family have done nothing for so long? And why the deafening silence from the church?
I climbed into the van and was immediately overcome with a terrible migraine. Unsure how I managed to drive home feeling the way I did, I fell into bed for most of the day convinced I was under spiritual attack from the enemy, trying to keep me from going back to that horrible place. But hasn’t the enemy always been a murderer, thief, and liar? I couldn’t listen to him.
I’ve been back every week since, at least once if not twice each week. Some of my children have gone with me. I will be taking all of them out there with me very soon. We are beginning to prepare their young, tender hearts and will have them making signs of their own to hold. While part of me wanted to take them out there right away, I’ve had to deal with my own heart and emotions first!
My life has been forever changed. I will never be the same. I will no longer be able to sit on the sidelines while other faithful Christians do all the work. Members of my family have questioned my sanity and are especially concerned that I would take my children to such a place. Each week I’ve seen more and more children out there. The faith of a child is an amazing thing…they are far less fearful than we adults. What could be better for these women to see as they are pulling in than children? And who better to storm the gates of hell together than families? I pray that the Lord will use us mightily in the weeks, months, and years to come to put an end to abortion in this city, and this country. May the Lord have mercy on us all.
