It has not ceased to move my heart that one out of every three women in America has an abortion by the age of 45. That means if you know three women, you know one that has had an abortion. Even the ones who celebrate choice rarely celebrate the decision they made to abort. Secret shame and sad grief follow one out of every three moms, wives, sisters, aunts, choir directors, church members. These women, without warning, suffer secretly from the mental and emotional consequence of abortion.
Post abortion stress syndrome is real and many of the symptoms follow women who have aborted their children. Since it is such a secret shame, these symptoms frequently go undiagnosed and untreated. I am writing this to expose some of the darkness that surrounds you or some of the women you know. I am not writing in judgment, I am writing with grace, so please read with grace and pray for the women in your life who may not even realize why these symptoms follow them yet. Not all women who have abortions immediately suffer these, sometimes they are suppressed for years. Not all women suffer all of these, but enough do to move my heart to write this. Most of the women suffering are not aware of the cause or the solution. If you are suffering, you are not alone and you’re not crazy, you just had an abortion.
Symptoms for post abortion stress syndrome include, but are not limited to:
Flash backs from sounds, smells, or sights in the place of abortion
Preoccupation with becoming pregnant
Fear of infertility
Alcohol and drug abuse
Self-punishing or self-degrading behaviors
Outbursts of severe, disproportionate anger
Irrational, fearful, jumpy, nervousness
Inability to socialize with pregnant women or babies
Unhealthy obsession with success in every other area to justify abortion
Inability or difficulty making even simple decisions on own
Weeping uncontrollably and randomly
Women from all walks of life and beliefs suffer from the consequences of abortion. Believing that it is a choice at the time of the procedure does not somehow make anyone immune to the hurt that follows.
Thankfully Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted and to remove guilt and the consequences of sin, even abortion.
He shall see the fruit of the travail of His soul and be satisfied; by His knowledge of Himself which He possesses and imparts to others shall My uncompromisingly righteous One, My Servant, justify many and make many righteous upright and in right standing with God, for He shall bear their iniquities and their guilt with the consequences, says the Lord. Isaiah 53:11 AMP
Regardless of the severity of the symptoms that follow post abortive women, Jesus also said that even more powerful signs will follow those who believe in Him. He said that we will lay hands on the sick and that they will recover. He promises healing and deliverance and that anything is possible to those who believe.
Jesus came to earth, lived a sinless life, and became sin on the cross for us. He bore your abortion, your guilt, and the consequences for you. The power that raised Jesus from the dead is greater than the power that keeps you bound to the symptoms of post abortion stress syndrome and His power is available to you today. Just ask.
Don’t let your heart be hardened by the hurt of your abortion. Allow your heart to break before Him. Admit that you made a mistake and ask Him to heal your broken heart and restore your body, mind, and emotions. He will not despise you. He is near the brokenhearted. God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. Don’t let the pride of the right of the choice you made prevent you from being healed today.
I personally know amazing women of God who have been healed and delivered from the symptoms mentioned above. There are no magic words or pills you can take to instantly recover, but if you’re searching for a place to start or a way to draw near the One who can set you free, perhaps praying this prayer will help you.
Dear Jesus, please forgive me for the sin of abortion. Remove my guilt, shame, and the consequences of abortion from me. In Your mercy, save me. Heal my heart. Heal my mind. Heal my body. Set me free and help me walk in freedom. In Jesus name, Amen.
